Barcelos is a land of impressive historical-patrimonial riches, presenting a vast archaeological and architectural legacy. Of splendid ethnography and considered the queen of pottery, ceramics and figurines, Barcelos managed to turn the image of the “Galo de Barcelos” (“Rooster of Barcelos”) into a symbol of Portuguese identity. Already known in the 13th century, the Barcelos Fair won an even greater reputation from the 15th century on, a status that still accompanies it today as every week, on Thursday, it receives thousands of visitors and potential buyers that find, along numerous stands, all types of products. Because of its economic vigour, colour and variety, it is considered, if not queen, definitely one of the princesses of the fairs of the north.
